Schaumburg man held on $1 mil bond in Michigan Avenue shooting

A 19-year-old Schaumburg man remained jailed on a $1 million bond Monday following a Sunday afternoon shooting outside a posh store on Chicago's bustling Michigan Avenue.

Cornelius Banks appeared in bond court Monday in Chicago, and so did Sheila Ferguson, the 30-year-old Chicago woman who was shot by police after they said she resisted arrest.

She's being held without bond, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.

The pair were arrested following a bizarre series of events shortly after noon at the Louis Vuitton store on the 900 block of North Michigan Avenue.

Police said the store called police after a sales clerk recognized the pair as suspects who the store believes used a fraudulent credit card on a recent shopping spree.

Police say Ferguson was shot as she tried to disarm a police officer and drive away from the Magnificent Mile.

"There was a struggle where she eventually made it to a vehicle," Chicago police Cmdr. Eric Washington said. "She made it to the vehicle, at which point a shot was fired."

Ferguson was taken to nearby Northwestern Hospital and later charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer, one count of disarming a peace officer and one count of forgery, police said.

"A young woman, there was a car. Both doors were open. She was on the ground. The first thought was the worst, but then I could see her breathing," said witness Mike Marshall.

Banks ran from the scene and was taken into police custody a short time later, police said. He was charged with one count of aggravated battery to a peace officer.

Police would not say how the two suspects knew each other, and added Ferguson didn't appear to be armed.

"(She was) kind of screaming and moaning. You couldn't understand what she was saying, but she was conscious. She lifted her head a couple of times," witness Andrea Cole said.

Two police officers were also hospitalized with minor injuries.

Banks and Ferguson are scheduled to appear in court again on May 19.
