Dolezal delivers as Fillies edge Fremd
Kiley Dolezal has played the fewest amount of innings on Barrington's 11-player roster this spring.
But the sophomore came up with some of the most clutch innings all spring for the Fillies.
Unexpectedly thrown into one of the most storied Mid-Suburban League softball rivalries of all time, Dolezal hardly flinched.
With one out and her team down 2-0 to Fremd with runners on first and third in the third inning, Dolezal took the mound and never allowed the host Vikings another run.
Meanwhile, the defending MSL champs battled back on offense and pulled out a 3-2 victory on Friday.
"This was the best competition Kiley has had to face and she did a nice job," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson, whose team (24-2, 10-1) took a half-game lead over Fremd (20-2, 9-1) in the MSL West.
"We have confidence in all 11 kids on our team and Kiley plays the least so she is to be commended," Peterson added. "She was obviously a huge part of us holding them to those 2 runs."
And Dolezal (3-0) wasn't the only sophomore playing a huge part for Barrington.
Designated player Elizabeth Owen belted a pair of RBI doubles in the fourth and sixth innings.
Barrington's other run came in the fourth when the Vikings made an error on Nora Logue's pop up in the infield which allowed Owen to score from second base.
"Defensively, that is very uncharacteristic of us," said Fremd coach Jim Weaver. "We made only 1 error the last 10 games. The good thing is that this shows us what we have to work on. You can never be satisfied with where you're at defensively."
Offensively, Vikings third baseman Kelly Voigt was where she had wanted to be as the junior went 4-for-4, ripping RBI singles to right field in the first and third innings for both of the Vikings runs.
Second baseman Lauren Zaworski scored on both of them.
Fremd ace Lena Brottman (14-2) gave up only a bloop single through the first three innings but Barrington senior Kim Cygan (21-2), who pitched the first 21/3 innings, got the Fillies rolling when she belted a single to right in the fourth.
"We were all fired up when Kim had the hard hit," Owen said. "Then we said we can all do it now."
The score was tied 2-2 when Kiersten Tinkoff led off the sixth with a double over the center fielder's head.
After a soft lineout to second baseman Lauren Zaworski, Owen came up and belted her second straight double, which proved to be the game-winning RBI.
"I struck out on two outside pitches my first time up," Owen said. "I wasn't going to let that happen again. We just weren't doing our best the first few innings. We knew we all had to step it up."
Kristine Werling also went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Vikings, who outhit Barrington 9-8.
"I thought our at-bats were fantastic," Weaver added. "Defensively, though, we had things that won't show up in the box score that we didn't do well."
Prospect 11, Wheeling 4: Freshman Hanna Lythberg (2-for-2, double, 3 runs), junior Kaila Walter (2-for-5, 2 runs), sophomore Allison Travis (3-for-5) and sophomore Nicole Naranjo (3-for-5, double) were the offensive leaders for Prospect (6-18, 4-7) while sophomore Sam Mangrum struck out six for the win.
Alyson Fallon (3-for-4) and Brittani Sapp (2-for-4, 2 runs) led the host Wildcats (2-14, 0-10).
Leyden 1, Evanston 0: Freshman Morgan Maize (10-4) threw a 2-hitter with a career-high 14 strikeouts for the visiting Eagles (14-10) in the nonconference game.
Maize was 2-for-3 while Amanda Moran and Kim Giannini had the other hits for Leyden.
Giannini singled to lead off the top of the fifth, went to second on Alyssa Stephens' sacrifice bunt and third on Ciara Mackey's groundout. She scored on a passed ball.
Schaumburg 2, Hoffman 0: Senior Missy Anderson (11-5) fired a 2-hitter with a career-high 15 strikeouts for Schaumburg (13-8, 6-4).
"Missy was fantastic," said Schaumburg coach Erin Malinowski.
The Saxons scored in the second when Caitlin Becker bunted home Sarah McGinn from third base.
McGinn had singled, advanced to second on an error and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brianne Lingl.
In the sixth, Lingl's two-out RBI single brought home freshman Alyssa Lancaster for the 2-0 cushion.
Hawks ace Kaitlin Walsh (7-9) struck out seven and had one of the 2 hits for Hoffman (9-14, 4-7) along with Emily Fett.
Buffalo Grove 6, Hersey 1: K.C. Dunne (3-for-4) led the Bison (14-12, 3-8), who received a 3-hitter and 4 strikeouts from sophomore Emily Begnel.
Andrea DiPrima had a double for BG while teammates Begnel and Nicole Soderholm also had base hits.
Aubrey Fulton and Aleene Morgenthaler doubled for the Huskies (5-15, 4-7) and Sarah Jurczak had their other hit.
Palatine 7, Conant 2: The Pirates improved to 11-12 and 5-6 as junior Chrissy Roto (7-8) struck out six for the win.
Sophomore Sam Salomone had a triple for the host Pirates while catcher Alyx Ballenger picked off two runners.
Briana Cavin (5-8) went 2-for-3 and had a triple for Conant (9-13, 3-6). She also struck out five in the first six innings.
Katie Mnichowicz was 2-for-4 for Palatine while Amanda VanJacobs was 2-for-4 for Conant.
Rolling Meadows 2, Grant 1: Sophomore Kelly Keyzer drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Meadows (10-13) the win in a quarterfinal of its own Mustang Stampede.
Senior Libby Marsh's RBI single in the fourth gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead before Grant tied it in the top of the seventh.
Freshman Josie Suchecki (6-9), back from a hip ailment, went all seven innings for the win, striking out seven and tossing a 5-hitter.
The Mustangs face Elmwood Park in today's 3:15 p.m. semifinals.
