Quenneville: We've got to stay out of the box
After getting in penalty trouble early in the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals and coming away with a split, the Blackhawks know they must be more disciplined when the series shifts to the United Center for Game 3 on Tuesday.
"It was a very similar story as the first game," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said after Saturday's 6-3 win in Game 2. "We took too many penalties and we're fighting against it. We've got to stay out of the box. When we play 5-on-5, I think we have a chance.
"When we have speed and attack with speed, we're dangerous, and our defensemen activate it."
The Hawks' defense has been as good as advertised moving the puck, starting with Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Cam Barker and Brian Campbell. The unsung heroes on the blue line have been Matt Walker and rookie Niklas Hjalmarsson.
"Their defense did a great job of finding their players up the ice," Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said after Game 2. "Part of that was our inability to make them turn and go back for the puck."
The Hawks dominated the second and third periods with their puck possession game.
"Early in the game we were late on pucks and found ourselves in the box again," Jonathan Toews said. "Once we got that first goal (from Patrick Sharp in the second period), it was a confidence builder. Every single line felt they could go out and score."
Ready for anything: The Hawks expect to see the best game the Canucks have to offer in Game 3.
"We know they're going to come back hard," Jonathan Toews said. "We've got to use out crowd and take advantage of playing at home like we have all year. We're excited about going back to our building."
Toews played with the flu again in Game 2 but was much more effective than in Game 1. He played 14 minutes, was plus-1 and assisted on Patrick Kane's goal.
"Johnny had a much better game," Joel Quenneville said. "He had more energy and had the puck more."
Missing in action: Through two games, the Canucks' Henrik and Daniel Sedin are a combined minus-3 with just 5 shots on goal. Henrik Sedin had a goal in Game 1.
Mats Sundin is minus-3 with 1 shot on goal for the series.
