New Waubonsie coach looking for challenge
Kim Connell won six regional championships and three sectional titles at Rockford Boylan.
She's ready for a new challenge.
"Basketball out in the suburbs is so much different than out here," Connell said. "I equate it to going from junior college to Division I or II. It's a step up. I'm ready for that challenge."
Connell took the challenge this month, accepting the head girls basketball job at Waubonsie Valley. She replaces Kris Kalivas, who is moving over to soon-to-open Metea Valley.
Connell went 257-105 in 12 seasons at Boylan. Her best year was her last, as the Titans went 31-2 and advanced to the Class 4A Elite Eight before losing to Wheeling.
The 1981 Schaumburg graduate went to Indiana State on a field hockey scholarship. With family still in the suburbs, the move was long-awaited.
"I always knew I wanted to get back to the suburbs," Connell said. "Waubonsie is an ideal spot, with the winning tradition they have."
Connell should have a strong group back from a Warriors team that went 19-9 and won its third straight regional title. Daily Herald All-Area forward Keiera Ray and fellow freshman Tami Morice both started most of the season.
Waubonsie Valley is one of two DuPage County schools to name new coaches recently. Lindsey Montgomery, a 1993 Hinsdale Central graduate and former standout, was named Red Devils coach in the past week.
