Public works open house:
Naperville residents are being invited to tour the city's new public works service center during an open house from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at 189 Fort Hill Drive. Residents can tour the building, check out a variety of equipment and view displays detailing the steps the city took to make the structure environmentally friendly. The facility, located on a 22-acre site, houses fleet services and operations, welding and sign shops, heated and unheated storage areas and office areas. It also houses archival storage for Naper Settlement. In addition, the city will be sponsoring its annual tree sale from 8 a.m. until noon on the same day. For details, visit www.naperville.il.us.
Spraying set for gypsy moths:
Naperville city and park district leaders will meet April 28 to discuss the proposed aerial spraying of several southeast Naperville parks and subdivisions as part of this year's gypsy moth control program. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the council chambers at city hall, 400 S. Eagle St. Spraying is scheduled for mid-to-late May in Knoch Knolls Park, Riverwoods Park, Walnut Ridge Woods and Walnut Ridge Park and the Caroline Woods and Bonnema Woods subdivisions. The treatment involves a naturally occurring bacterium that affects the stomach of very small gypsy moth caterpillars. Trails in the affected parks will be closed during spraying. For details, visit www.naperville.il.us/gypsymoth.aspx.
Library receives award:
The Glen Ellyn Jaycees and the Chamber of Commerce recently selected the Glen Ellyn Public Library as their nonprofit organization of the year for 2008. The library was chosen for its contributions to the community, including Late Night Study Hours for teens, computer classes for youth and adults and participation in the Chamber's Halloween Happening and Holiday Walk. The groups also recognized the opening of the "Teen Scene" room this year; the opening provides an area of comfortable seating for group study.
Children invited to play:
A children's play called "The Ox's Trial" by Aurora University junior Travis Winkler will be presented at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at Aurora University's Perry Theatre in the Aurora Foundation Center, 1305 Kenilworth Place, Aurora. The play is for children up to age 8. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
