Bond not revoked in Maple Park drug-related death
A Maple Park man charged in the drug-related death of a friend will remain free on bond despite his arrest last month on unrelated drug charges.
Kane County Judge Allen M. Anderson denied prosecutors' motion Thursday to raise or revoke bond for Jordan D. Billek, 18, who is charged with obstructing justice in the December 2007 death of 17-year-old Michael York of Elburn.
Billek was arrested early March 26 in Aurora after police said they found a syringe and a cotton ball containing opium in a driver's-side door compartment. The arrest came just two months after Billek and two others were charged with dumping York's body in Chicago after his apparent drug overdose at a party in St. Charles.
On Thursday, defense attorney Jeffrey Fawell said Billek is a heroin addict who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 12 and whose biological mother was a schizophrenic drug addict. He said Billek sought treatment for his addiction after being charged in the York case but had suffered a relapse.
"Jordan had been doing very well," Fawell told the judge. "He is committed to not going down the road he has gone down before. Jordan is making substantial steps ... toward kicking the habit."
Anderson said his concern was for the safety of the public and ensuring that Billek continues to attend regularly scheduled court appearances. He ordered Billek to check in with the court once a week, undergo random drug tests and continue his treatment program.
Billek is scheduled for arraignment in both cases on June 4. Co-defendant Nathan Green, 22, of Maple Park, also appeared before Anderson on Thursday but his case was continued to May 28. A third defendant, Lindsey Parker, 18, of St. Charles, is due back in court Thursday, April 30.
