Feece scores 2 as Vernon Hills earns draw

Mallory Feece will be playing her soccer at Louisiana Tech next fall.

The Vernon Hills senior isn't looking ahead, however. She's focused on helping the Cougars.

Feece scored on a header and on a 40-yard curling kick - both off set pieces - enabling Vernon Hills to tie Glenbard West 2-2 Thursday in the Niles West invitational in Skokie. The goals were her first two of the season.

The second Feece tally occurred in the final five minutes off a free kick.

"I was actually trying to play the ball for Lauren (Davis)," Feece said. "I don't know how it went in. I didn't want to sky it. I was looking for my teammate. Luckily, it went in."

Feece had scored early in the second half when she headed in her sister Jessica's corner kick.

Vernon Hills (5-4-1, 1-0-1) rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit.

"The team doesn't give up," said assistant coach Al Beard, who was filling in for coach Vince DeLuca, who was out sick. "They dug deep and fought within themselves. We changed the formation and took some chances. We wanted to be more on the attack."

Glenbard West (7-4-2,1-0-1) got its goals from Quin Refer, assisted by Lex Crovatto in the fifth minute, and Lauren Davis. Abbie Mache set up Davis' tally late in the first half.

"We're not that physical of a team," Glenbard West coach Maciek Kusmierz said. "(Vernon Hills) had both goals off set pieces, and that's something that we usually don't see. We don't give up that many goals. "We had a little more of a difficult time in the second half."

Antioch 2 Niles West 2: Niles West scored in the final five minutes to pull out the tie at Nile West.

Antioch is 3-5-4 overall and 1-0-1 in the tournament.

"We come away from this game with mixed feelings," Antioch coach Hannah Drye said. "I'm very happy with how much we're improving. We put together a good second half until the end when we gave up the goal, and that is frustrating."

Antioch's Mallory Fracek scored in the 32nd minute off an assist from Alisa Walizer. Erica Slack tallied in the 63rd minute off an assist from Katrina Holm.

Grayslake Central 2, Grayslake North 1: Megan LeBaron scored the winning goal - her ninth of the season - as the Rams rallied after spotting the Knights a 1-0 lead in the second half.

Morganne Taylor also scored for Grayslake Central (9-3, 3-1 Fox Valley), while Sarah Burnett and Skyler Jessop had assists.

Grayslake North (5-5. 1-2) struck first when Elese Merkovsky placed a perfect service onto the head of Alyssa Soulis, who headed the ball into the corner of the net.

Hersey 1, Lake Zurich 0: The Bears allowed a first-half goal in falling to 4-6-2.
