Find a bargain at Batavia Library book sale

More than 20,000 books, videos, and DVDs will be offered for sale during the Spring Used Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25, in the meeting room at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

"The book sale is green, cheap, and smart," said Daniel Russo, president of the Friends. He explained that keeping books in circulation rather than in landfills is good for the environment and that the cost of items is cheap - 50 cents for small paperbacks, $1 for hardcovers, and $2 for DVDs.

"Shopping at the book sale is also smart because reading is enjoyable, it makes you smarter, and all the proceeds are used to support programs for adults and children at Batavia Public Library," Russo said.

The Friends sponsor "One Book, One Batavia," the summer and winter book clubs, scholarships for library pages, and other projects that promote literacy.

To prepare for the book sale, Karen LaBarbera, book sale chairwoman, and dozens of volunteers have sorted books into fiction and nonfiction subject categories to make browsing easy. There are also sections for children's books, videos, DVDs, and audiobooks.

"We're really excited about giving people the chance to hunt for treasures. There's nothing like seeing the smile on the face of someone who has just found a favorite or soon-to-be favorite book," LaBarbera said.

The spring sale also features a specials room with autographed, first edition, and collectible books that are individually priced.

"Serious bargain hunters should consider heading to the library at noon on Saturday," LaBarbera said. "At that time, all items will be available for half price."

The Friends of Batavia Public Library is a nonprofit organization that accepts donations of used books and visual media throughout the year. Donations may be dropped off at the library's circulation desk. For details, visit www.BataviaPublicLibrary.org/Friends or call (630) 879-8220.
