Carbon monoxide sickens 11 in Carpentersville

A carbon monoxide leak in a Carpentersville home sent 11 people from a single residence to local hospitals, authorities said Thursday afternoon.

At 1:34 p.m. Thursday, a 911 call came from a home in the first block of Wren Road in which residents complained about feeling sick from a possible carbon monoxide leak, according to a fire department news release.

Fire personnel entered the house and discovered that the high levels of carbon monoxide had killed two parakeets, which occupants said had been alive and well the night before.

Six adults and five children, ranging in age from 11 months to 37 years, were taken to area hospitals.

Two people who complained of nausea and headaches were being treated at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, while the other nine were taken to Sherman Hospital as a precautionary measure, Carpentersville Fire Chief John Schuldt said.

None of the illnesses were serious, Schuldt said.

Officials say the leak came from a malfunctioning furnace and oven.

The gas has been turned off and officials have told the homeowner to hire an inspector before turning it back on, Schuldt said.

Although 11 occupants were in the house at the time of the leak, authorities do not know if they all lived there.

West Dundee, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Rutland Dundee and East Dundee fire departments assisted.
