West Chicago police seek bakery robber

West Chicago police are investigating a robbery early this week at a bakery on the 500 block of Main Street, authorities said Wednesday.

A man entered the bakery about 9:40 a.m. Monday and asked questions about the baked goods before striking the cashier in the head with an empty bottle, police said.

The man then ordered the victim to hand over all the money in the register. When the cashier hesitated, the suspect said he had a gun, police said.

No firearm was displayed, according to reports.

The victim gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash. The man fled and entered a black, newer-model SUV, which police said is possibly a Dodge Durango or Chevy Trailblazer. He was last seen driving west on Main Street.

Police described the robber as a Hispanic, about 24 years old, with black hair worn in a spiky style. He stands about 5 feet 7 inches with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a blue, square stud earring in his left ear, a white "Corona" T-shirt and black pants.

Anyone with information concerning the incident is asked to call West Chicago police at (630) 293-2222. Callers also may contact DuPage County Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477. All callers to Crime Stoppers are guaranteed anonymity and may qualify for a cash reward up to $1,000.
