Bike path work approved
The release of $475,000 in federal funds for planning and engineering work on a Busse Woods bike path bridge over Higgins Road by Rt. 53 has been approved, Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson said, crediting U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, a Wheaton Republican, with helping secure the funding. The intersection is very dangerous for people using the path, Johnson said. Construction is likely to cost several million dollars as the bridge will be longer and the project more complicated that a $1.5 million bridge across Higgins by Arlington Heights Road, he said. He expressed optimism about finding funding for construction after engineering work is done.
Holocaust survivor to speak
Holocaust survivor and Beth Judea congregant Joseph Koek will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, to the Beth Judea Youth Group USY in the youth lounge after evening services. Beth Judea is located on Rt. 83 and Hilltop Road in Long Grove. A $10 donation to Tikun Olam is requested of nonmembers. Lions appraising antiques
The Des Plaines Lions Club will be holding an Antiques Appraisal Show from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at First Congregational Church, 766 Graceland Ave. The cost is $10, and the first 75 people with paid reservations will be able to bring an item for appraisal. Additional items may be appraised for $10 each, time permitting. No weapons, coins or stamps will be appraised. The event is based on the popular public TV program, "Antiques Roadshow" and will feature a presentation and appraisals by Karl Gates. Proceeds will aid the blind and hearing-impaired. Concert tickets available
The U.S. Air Force Concert Band and Singing Sergeants will perform at Forest View Educational Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights, at 7 p.m. Friday, April 17. Co-sponsored by the Daily Herald and District 214 Community Education, the 52-member band will perform a variety of musical selections capped off with a tribute to the armed services. The Singing Sergeants is the internationally recognized, official 23-voice chorus of the U.S. Air Force. The concert is free.
