Wronski helps Raiders run past Libertyville
Each game this spring, the Huntley girls soccer team has accepted the challenge.
And the victories keep adding up. Huntley picked up its ninth win in 10 games on Saturday afternoon at Libertyville.
The Red Raiders keep distancing themselved from the competition with their offense. The result this time was a 1-0 victory over the host Wildcats in nonconference play.
On the decisive goal, Aimee Wronski ran to get free for a scoring opportunity and made good in the 35th minute.
"We've been working on our runs," said Wronski of the team's success and her 11th goal this season. "I know I can see it, and I'm a fast runner. If the ball is played through, I can get to it. It's the main thing as a forward ... I was ready for the run I needed to make."
Wronski slid in behind the Libertyville defense, received a well-placed pass from Lauren Opolony and scored.
"I just focused where I wanted to put it and kept my composure," Wronski said. "It was a great ball from Lauren."
Huntley coach Kris Grabner admired the effort on the goal and the entire team's play.
"We had a beautiful goal, from the pass through to the finish," Grabner said. "We want them to play good soccer, moving with the ball. That's gotten better throughout the season. Defensively, they did a good job withstanding (Libertyville's) pressure."
Huntley's Sara Hoffman made 4 stops and earning the shutout in goal.
The Red Raiders wanted the meeting with the Wildcats to see where they sit at this point of the season.
"We wanted to get Libertyville on the schedule so we could have better competition," Grabner said. "Libertyville was a good team, a physical team and good in the air."
Libertyville (0-3) had lost its two previous games, to Savanna Country Day (Georgia) and Lake Forest 3-2. The Wildcats have played some pretty good competition thus far but feeling like they're getting close to win No. 1.
"I thought we played well enough to win," Libertyville coach Scott Schinto said. "We're making some mistakes in the back and we're trying to identify ourselves from the backside.
"We still haven't won a game and it's frustrating. We've played some great teams. We just need to do a few more things that will allow us to get over the hump."
