Science vs. Intelligent design

This is a response to Mr. Norm Reuter's letter (Feb. 4), in which he mocks the letter from Lisa Williams who stated that "intelligent design is mythology and has no basis in scientific fact or theory." Mr. Reuter says that "This presupposes that anything that is not scientific fact or a proven theory does not exist."

That is simply not true. Lisa Williams's statement presupposes nothing of the sort. It simply states that no scientific inquiry has ever offered any evidence of an intelligent design. Furthermore, quoting a well respected scientist, Mr. Reuter writes that. " The odds of Earth, sun and moon accidentally falling into perfect orbit were one in a billion." The word "accident" has long been removed from the vocabulary of the true science.

Nothing happens by accident. Celestial bodies behave according to the laws of nature and orbiting the way they do due to gravitational forces between them.

Chance and accident has nothing to do with it. Mr. Reuter, I wonder what did "designer" have in mind when he "designed" earthquake, floods, volcanos and famine? Also, perhaps you can explain what does free will and ability to think have to do with evolution of species? Many years ago there was a man names Copernicus who held a view that earth was in daily motion around it's own axis and a yearly motion around the sun. Church condemned him. Galileo Galilei was forced by church authorities to renounce all his beliefs in Copernicus theories and sentenced to life in prison where he also died. Giordano Bruno went beyond Copernicus and suggested that the space was boundless and the sun and its planets were but one of the many similar systems. For these claims, Bruno was burned at the stake... by church's Inquisition. So much about what the church and believers believed.

The opinion of 85% of Americans that an intelligent being is their creator must be respected. But to say that Lisa Williams was created by an unintelligent being (as Mr. Reuter stated) simply because she maintains that intelligent design is a mythology is an insult and a reflection of Mr. Reuters narrow way of thinking.
