Most people agree with Kwasigroch

As we watch most politicians screw up government finances and just get seemingly everything wrong, we become disgusted. Then, just in time, it seems a really great candidate pops up! That's what I love about America, and that's what I love about our representative democracy. It happened nationally when Ronald Reagan cleaned up after Jimmy Carter in 1980.

Of course, opponents (and the media) will try to put a bad spin when such a candidate appears, but the common sense of such a candidate's message is too strong to be defeated. Locally, it seems we have such a candidate in Mark Kwasigroch, who is running for trustee in the village of Wauconda. I live a few feet outside the boundaries of Wauconda, so I can't vote for him; I can however, still express my opinion.

When Mr. Kwasigroch suggested during an interview at the Daily Herald's Lake County office that all residents of Wauconda "embrace" their heritage and, at the same time, learn English, one politician responded by saying he was "startled." I'm sure, in those surroundings, this politician sensed that such a statement would be well received. The only place in the country where you can say you're "startled" at this statement and not be laughed at would, indeed, be at a newspaper's office. Even put in the worst light possible, Mr. Kwasigroch's comment bloomed out of the front page like a colorful spring flower in the long dead dirt.

My guess is that a once obscure, longshot candidate for trustee just won the election in Wauconda. Just as my grandfather proudly learned English when he came to America, Spanish speakers want the same privilege. They are just as proud and capable as past immigrants, and they, too will be voting for Mark Kwasigroch.
