Ennis: Keep Cooper on Dist. 214 board

As the District 214 school board election nears I would like to urge voters to re-elect Miriam (Mimi Cooper) Spickard. Even though it has been a few years since I retired I continue to be proud of a district that flourishes under strong administrative and board leadership.

The health of public education depends upon a successful struggle to attain resources, talent and dedication from all who participate in the endeavor. Mimi Cooper has been in the middle of the 214 success story for more terms than most could or would serve. She brings stability, history and knowledge that few, if any, might bring to the task of board leadership. She has made tough decisions and contributed significantly to every aspect of school board business.

Policy makers at the local level of public schooling are key to school success because their decisions impact the day-to-day work of teachers and students. Mimi's board leadership has resulted in 16 years of a balanced budget! This is a circumstance only dreamed of by many nearby school districts.

She has consistently promoted academics yet, not at the expense of the arts as is happening in so many school systems. ACT scores continue to climb to the highest in the district's history and the fine and performing arts continue to blossom. These achievements occur because informed leadership provides an environment to support their development and growth.

Mimi Cooper has contributed thousands of hours to District 214 because she believes in giving back to her community and because she believes deeply that young people should have the best opportunities possible to become informed and productive citizens. Mimi's professional skills and talents are top-notch and her integrity is unquestionable. Keep her on the District 214 school board.
