Background checks a must for board members

As a father of four, nothing is more important to me than the safety of my children. So I was surprised to learn that school board members can roam the schools completely unsupervised and do not have to go through any kind of background check. But what angered me is that not all of the current District 158 school board members think background checks are a good idea. Larry Snow, who is up for re-election on April 7, would not go on record in support of writing a policy requiring the checks. He simply said, "It could be a good thing, or something people may not want."

I refuse to support a school board candidate who won't commit to an initiative that would ensure my children's safety while they are at school. Snow's opponent, Mike Skala, said he was in favor of creating a policy that required background checks.
