Pitching strong again for Grayslake Central
Grayslake Central will win a lot of baseball games this season if it keeps getting the pitching it has the last two days.
Juniors Kevin DeRue and Nick Richter combined to throw a 1-hitter with 15 strikeouts in leading the Rams to a 4-0 home victory over Round Lake on Thursday.
DeRue earned the win, striking out nine and his 4 innings of work. Richter worked the final 3 frames, fanning six.
Grayslake Central - which opened its season Wednesday with a 6-1 win over Antioch behind the pitching of SIU-bound Aaron Snyder - was led offensively by Chris Brown (triple, single) and Jackson White (double).
The Rams host Zion-Benton on Friday.
Matt Ortiz had a double, walk and stolen base for Round Lake in its season opener under first-year coach Ed Adamson.
Stevenson 10, Waukegan 0: Kory Cutler went 3-for-3 with a triple and double, and Matt Geissler was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI for the host Patriots in their season opener.
On the mound, Illinois State-bound Brad Sorkin fired 4 2/3 innings of 4-hit ball.
Libertyville 3, Glenbrook North 0: Eastern Illinois-bound Troy Barton pitched a complete-game 2-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking two.
Adam Quinn had a double for Libertyville (3-1), which won its third straight.
Lake Zurich 9, Cary-Grove 9: The nonconference game was called after seven innings, with Cary-Grove scoring twice in the top of the seventh to pull even.
Sam Aslan (3-for-3), Chas Evans (3-for-5), Tanner Witt (2-for-4) and Tyler Schmitz (2-for-4) paced Lake Zurich offensively. Aslan, Evans and Witt all had doubles. Lake Zurich (1-0-1) wiped out deficits of 5-1 and 7-5.
