Meet with assessor
Blackberry Township Assessor Uwe Rotter will conduct a taxpayer workshop at 7 tonight at the Blackberry Township building, 43W390 Main Street Road, Elburn. Taxpayers will learn about the property tax cycle, how assessments are developed and the appeal process. Red Gate closure
The westbound lane on Red Gate Road, from Myles Road to Longview Drive, will be closed for two weeks beginning Monday for utility work in preparation for widening the intersection of Red Gate and Randall roads in May. Work was originally scheduled to start today. A temporary signal will control traffic during the lane closure. ECC waives job fair fee
Elgin Community College has waived the $275 registration fee for employers participating in the college's April 2 job fair. Peggy Gundrum, director of ECC's career services department, said eliminating the fee encourages more employer participation during a time when they may be thinking twice about what to spend their money on. The job fair will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Spartan Events Center, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
Insect seminar
A gardening seminar on "backyard bugs" April 4 will raise money for Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets, an animal rescue group based in St. Charles. The 10 a.m. seminar at Wasco Nursery & Garden Center, 41W781 Route 64, will include information about which insects are beneficial to plants and yards, and which can cause harm. Attendees also will learn to identify symptoms of common plant diseases and how to treat them. Admission is a $5 donation. Call (630) 584-4424.
