Ex-College of Lake County cop surrenders after bond raised

Marc W. Carder, an ex-College of Lake County police officer twice arrested on charges of crimes involving a teenage girl, was back behind bars Monday after he decided not to fight efforts to hold him in jail while awaiting trial.

Carder, 48, turned himself in to the McHenry County jail after he and his attorney did not object to prosecutors' request to raise his bond - previously set at $9,500 - to $25,000.

Defense attorney Daniel Hofmann declined to comment on Carder's reasons for not opposing the increase, and said he does not expect his client to post bond immediately.

The Island Lake man first was arrested in 2007 on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse stemming from claims he had a sexual relationship with a teenage girl between 2002 and 2006.

McHenry County Sheriff's police arrested him again earlier this month on three harassment of a witness charges claiming he tried to trick investigators into believing his accuser was reaching out to him through comments posted on two social networking Web sites, MySpace.com and HoneymoonWishes.com.

The messages, which police now say came from Carder himself, state that the girl continues to have romantic feelings about him.

A former supervisor for the College of Lake County's police force, Carder was fired after his arrest on the sex charges.
