District 15 needs board with talent, dedication
In general, the six newcomers and two incumbents seeking four, 4-year terms on the Palatine Township Elementary District 15 school board are all sincere and capable potential trustees. However, re-establishing the board's credibility and dealing with such dramatic issues as achieving federal standards and negotiating a new teacher contract will demand a special blend of experience and dedication.
For three of the four seats at stake, the choices are clear. Incumbent Nancy Lee Carlson continues to serve as a knowledgeable and independent trustee. Newcomers Margaret "Peggy" Babcock, a facilitator for a cancer support group, and Mark J. Bloom, a self-described "stay-at-home dad" who has followed the district closely, speak articulately and extremely knowledgeably about the district's needs and opportunities.
For the fourth position, we continue to support, albeit with some concerns, Timothy Millar, a reform candidate in the past election now seeking his second term. Millar still needs to grow in his ability to relate to both his fellow board members and the district administration, but he remains a dedicated trustee willing to ask difficult questions. His four years of experience will be valuable for the difficult decisions ahead. Candidates Richard Bokor, Steven Miller, Matthew Taylor and Vicki Wilson each offer particular strengths. But for the best combination of experience, insight and energy at a challenging time, we endorse Babcock, Bloom, Carlson and Millar.
