Koch, Williams, Schultz best in Vernon Hills
All five candidates for village trustee in Vernon Hills rightfully agree that filling vacancies to protect Vernon Hills' massive retail base is the key to keeping afloat in a faltering economy.
The three incumbents, Thom Koch Jr., a middle-school teacher, Barbara Williams, a bus company contract manager and James E. Schultz, a supply chain management consultant, already have been dealing with the situation. We believe their experience and knowledge of village finance provide the necessary continuity during a tough time. All three are endorsed.
Newcomer David M. Smith, an account executive, shares the concerns but he was unfamiliar with the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. Mandated village contributions to the fund could have a significant impact on the village budget.
Another political newcomer, Michael Rochow, a mechanical engineer, suggests the village develop a downtown area as a focal point and identity. He also is running for the Vernon Hills Park District board and intends to serve on both if elected. The Daily Herald holds to its policy of not endorsing candidates who would serve in multiple positions.
