Three apartments damaged in Wheaton fire
A Friday morning fire in downtown Wheaton left three apartments uninhabitable, officials said.
Firefighters responded about 9:20 a.m. to a report of smoke coming from a building at 111 W. Indiana St. When they arrived they found heavy smoke coming from the second floor and attic areas of the two-story frame structure.
No one was inside the building at the time, officials said.
Authorities said the blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes. The fire was contained to the second floor, but there was smoke and water damage throughout.
One of the firefighters suffered a minor injury, but was checked by paramedics at the scene.
Officials said the cause of the blaze is under investigation and no damage estimate was available. The structure has been declared uninhabitable until repairs are made.
