Man hit with ax in Round Lake Park trailer park fight

One man was struck four times with an ax and another was stabbed during a melee Thursday outside a Round Lake Park trailer home, police said.

Police Chief George Filenko said the 28-year-old Chicago man was in critical, but stable condition Friday at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville after being hit with the ax. The 22-year-old Waukegan man who suffered a stab wound was treated at Condell.

Witnesses told police Vinson H. Tate, 29, of the 1700 block of Glen Drive, North Chicago, used the blunt end of the full-handle ax to strike the Chicago man in the head, back, spine and kidneys. Tate was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon/great bodily harm and is held on $500,000 bond at the Lake County jail.

Four other people also were charged in connection with the fight. Police said the injured men who were taken to Condell had not been charged as of Friday.

Round Lake Park police were summoned at 3:23 p.m. Thursday to the 400 block of Center Street, in the Timber Creek mobile home complex. Officers found the Chicago man near the home, laying partially on the road, bleeding and unconscious.

Filenko said three men got into a confrontation outside the trailer home, possibly over a debt. It escalated to the point where the Chicago man stabbed the Waukegan man in the back. Vinson entered the fray by striking the Chicago man with the ax, Filenko said.

The 22-year-old Waukegan man was whisked into a van by Michelle Kloss-Bara, her husband Jeremy Bara and Tate, Filenko said. The trio then fled, but Hainesville and Round Lake Park police caught them at routes 120 and 134 after a radio alert was issued.

The four people, in addition to Tate, who were charged in the altercation are:

•Kloss-Bara, 35, of the 400 block of Windridge Drive, Round Lake Beach. She was charged with obstructing a police officer because she "misrepresented all the facts" in an interview, Filenko said.

•Bara, 38, also of the 400 block of Windridge Drive, Round Lake Beach. He was charged with aggravated assault.

•Christopher M. Pople, 28, of the 2600 block of W. Autumn Drive, Round Lake. He was charged with mob action.

•Sean J. Madden, 17, of the 50 block of Rushmore Street, Fox Lake. He was charged with mob action.
