Kane looks at his 'chances' as a positive

When Patrick Kane looked at the tape of Wednesday's game with Carolina on Thursday morning, he relived how it could have been a magical night.

Kane could have had at least 4 goals. What he watched was Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward stop him three times on breakaways, and his wrist shot bang off the crossbar in overtime.

Kane did score a huge goal in the shootout in the Hawks' dramatic 3-2 victory.

"I didn't even know I was going to get picked in the shootout," Kane joked.

Kane preferred to view his misses as positives instead of letting them affect his confidence.

"You've got to take it like you're getting those chances," Kane said. "You hit a crossbar there in overtime and it seems like the game is going to be over, and then you see the puck come out of the air in the corner.

"It was one of those things where the night wasn't going to well for me, but at the same time you take it as a positive that you're getting those chances and finding ways to be creative."

Kane's assist in the win gave him 14 points in the last 14 games, but he still has scored only 5 goals in his last 32 games.

"I love when you get chances," Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "It's a good sign because eventually they're going to go in. You get those quality chances you know a guy like Kaner is going to bury them.

"The fact that he was getting those chances you could see some more speed in the rush on him. The finish is right around the corner."

Back to Huet: Even though Nikolai Khabibulin is healthy, Cristobal Huet will start again in goal tonight against Columbus at the United Center.

Huet is coming off an outstanding 29-save performance against Carolina and has beaten the Blue Jackets twice this season in two starts.

Khabibulin, who dressed as Huet's backup Wednesday, likely will get the start Sunday against the New York Islanders.

"Khabby put the one foot in the water yesterday. We'll put the other one in there and maybe he'll dive in on Sunday," Joel Quenneville said.

"We'll see how Khabby, once he gets in the net, how he handles it. We'll get him playing as much as we can here down the stretch. I don't want to forecast any rotation, but we'd like to get him in some kind of groove here."

Tip-ins: Martin Havlat took part in Thursday's full practice and returns today after missing one game with a lower body injury. ... With another power-play assist Wednesday, Cam Barker has scored 25 of his 33 points with the man advantage.
