Lake County briefs

No charges in Libertyville death

Libertyville police said Thursday charges will not be filed in connection with the drug overdose death of Janine Wiltjer, 47. Wiltjer was found dead early Feb. 19 in her apartment. An autopsy determined she had toxic levels of opiates, likely heroin, in her body when she died, and alcohol also contributed to her death. Her husband, Thomas, alerted police using her cell phone but was not at the apartment when police arrived. Police Chief Pat Carey said the case has been under review by the Lake County state's attorney's office. "We don't believe anybody slipped the drugs to her," he said. No drugs or drug paraphernalia was found in the apartment. Carey said the pair apparently did not live together but Thomas Wiltjer, of Spring Grove, visited regularly. Carey said the case is considered closed.

Candidate drops out

An Antioch mayoral candidate has withdrawn from contention in the April 7 race, officials confirmed Thursday. Kris Murphy, running as a write-in candidate, withdrew Wednesday, the Lake County clerk's office said. In an e-mailed statement, Murphy said she left the race because running a successful campaign against opponents who had more time to organize, stragetize and raise support is an "insurmountable task." She also said she didn't want to take votes away from any deserving candidates. The move leaves three candidates for a 4-year term: trustee Bob Caufield, trustee Larry Hanson and Antioch Community High School student Erik Peters. Peters is a write-in candidate and will not appear on the ballot. Current Mayor Dorothy Larson is not seeking re-election.

Boil order lifted

Fox Lake officials on Thursday ended the water boil order imposed the previous day on 2,500 residents in 12 subdivisions affected by a shutdown of the Tall Oaks water plant on Grass Lake Road. The water system was shut down after a hit-and-run accident sheered off a fire hydrant on Country Club Hills Drive about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The accident caused a water main to snap underground, and led to the main and reserve water tanks being drained. The pipe was repaired and the tanks refilled, and the boil order was issued while the water was tested. Tests show there are no contaminants and water was safe for use.

Robbery arrest made

An Antioch man was arrested after he robbed a Waukegan currency exchange with a device made to look like a bomb, police said. The robbery occurred about 11 a.m. Sunday at Casa De Cambio Latino, 1550 Grand Avenue. Alonzo Almanza, 39, of the 26000 block of West Shannon, was charged with aggravated robbery. Police said Almanza was wearing dark clothes and a scarf on his face when he entered the business, demanded money and threatened to blow up the building with what appeared to be a pipe bomb taped to a cellular phone. He fled with an undisclosed amount of money but left the device, police said. Authorities later determined the device was not capable of detonating. Almanza was arrested following an investigation, police said.
