Neighbors in the news
• Tim Weidner, a 1998 graduate of Prospect High School, was inducted Saturday, Feb. 28, into the Valparaiso University Athletic Hall of Fame. Weidner lettered in swimming, hockey and volleyball at Prospect then went on to swim at Valparaiso University, where he set eight school records, was all conference, captain, MVP and an academic All American. Graduating from Valparaiso in 2002, Weidner is now a licensed professional engineer working for Engineering Enterprises in Sugar Grove.
• Ann Carroll, a John Hersey High School senior, was named to the prepvolleyball.com Academic All American list for her excellent athleticism and superior academic standing. The Web site seeks nominees for this honor from high school coaches nationally. Only 40 players were selected from all the nominees. Carroll was the only girl selected from Illinois.
• Dr. David R. Schuler, Township High School District 214 superintendent, was named among the top educational leaders under age 40 in the country by Scholastic Administrator, an education, technology and leadership publication for school leaders.
• Tom Carbaugh, a senior mechanical engineering major at Valparaiso University, will compete March 13 and 14, as a member of Valparaiso's Dardanos design team, in the renowned Jerry Sanders Creative Design Competition. The event will test the ability of the Dardanos team to create a robot that can play a game of tic-tac-toe by accomplishing a variety of assigned tasks. Carbaugh is the son of Vincent and Linda Carbaugh of Arlington Heights.
• Steve Scanlan of Painting in Partnership, Inc., a Palatine-based premiere house painting contractor, received the L.E. Travis Jr. PDCA Craftsman of the Year Award from the Painting and Decorating Contractors of America at its national convention in New Orleans. The award is given annually to honor the finest craftsmen in the house painting and decorating industry. Scanlan is a seven-year veteran of Painting in Partnership Inc.
• The following individuals were honored by the School District 62 school board for 25 years of service: Karen Groom, social worker, Forest Elementary School; Bonnie Hussar, SPARK, Terrace Elementary School; Dagmar Rutzen, teacher, Algonquin Middle School; Steven Smith, custodian, Iroquois Community School; and Wayne Wright, custodian, South Elementary School.
• Angie Keyes, a designer at Insignia Kitchen and Bath Design Group in Barrington, was awarded first place, large bath category, in the 2008 National Kitchen & Bath Association Design Visions Award Competition.
