Havlat plucks the Ducks in overtime
Remember earlier in the season when Martin Havlat's name would be mentioned as someone the Blackhawks might trade when the deadline rolled around?
Well, the NHL trade deadline is today and Havlat is not going anywhere.
Havlat continued his torrid play Tuesday night, scoring a dramatic goal in overtime to give the Hawks a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks at the United Center.
"He's been unbelievable," Duncan Keith said. "He's got to keep doing that for us."
Even with Havlat set to be an unrestricted free agent after the season, it likely would take a whopper of an offer for Hawks general manager Dale Tallon to consider trading him.
"The deadline is not a question for the players," Havlat said. "I think you've got to talk to somebody else about that. We're just here to play hockey. If it's about me, I'm just trying to help the team win games."
Havlat also had an assist to extend his points scoring streak to nine games (4 goals, 11 assists). The 2 points gave him 57 to move past Patrick Kane for the team scoring lead.
Havlat's winning goal was special. He picked up a loose puck at center ice, skated in on goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere and scored with Corey Perry draped all over him.
"I saw the puck coming out of the zone and I saw somebody next to me," Havlat said. "I think the guy (Perry) was more tired than I was so I just tried to beat him 1-on-1."
"When I saw Marty going in on a breakaway like that, I liked our chances," said goalie Cristobal Huet, who made 26 saves.
The Hawks led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Troy Brouwer and Andrew Ladd but fell apart in the first 41/2 of the second period as the Ducks tied it.
Brouwer's ninth goal came 1:03 into the game, and Ladd made it 2-0 at 11:26, finishing a pretty passing play with linemates Havlat and Dave Bolland.
Now the attention turns to Tallon and what he may or may not get accomplished at today's trade deadline, with the focus still believed to be on acquiring a center and defenseman.
"We can be confident with what we've got, but I'm sure Dale will do whatever he feel he needs to do to make the team better," Huet said.
If there are Hawks worried about being moved, coach Joel Quenneville hasn't seen it affect anyone's game.
"As far as distractions go, I don't think there's been a lot of talk around the team or guys having to worry about being uprooted," Quenneville said. "The guys have been very professional about how they approached these last couple of games, not having the trade deadline in the back of their mind and just playing."
