Fire damages clubhouse at Oak Meadows golf course
Fire ravaged the clubhouse of an Addison-area golf course Thursday night.
The blaze at the Oak Meadows Golf Club, 900 N. Wood Dale Road, was discovered after 7 p.m. but continued burning hours later. No injuries were reported, but the building - which dates back to the 1920s - appeared to be badly damaged, witnesses said.
"It's very disappointing," said Bill Weidner, spokesman for the DuPage County Forest Preserve District, which owns the course.
Dozens of firefighters from many area departments battled the blaze. Crews from Addison, Bensenville, Carol Stream, West Chicago, Roselle, Bloomingdale, Hanover Park, Oak Brook, Elmhurst and Lisle were among those on the scene.
The clubhouse building was closed when the fire was discovered, Weidner said. Forest district police had responded to an intruder alarm, found no one but smelled smoke and called the fire department, he said.
Firefighters arrived as the attic on the north side was engulfed in flames. The blaze later spread south.
As the fire raged late Thursday, Weidner said it was too early to say how badly the building was damaged.
Oak Meadows is one of three courses owned by the forest district.
