Township Officials of Illinois: St. Charles Township is announcing the Township Officials of Illinois scholarship program for graduating high school seniors planning to attend an Illinois college or university in the fall of 2009. The program, sponsored by the state association, is for deserving Illinois students that have demonstrated a willingness to accept leadership responsibilities and serve their respective communities. TOI will award seven $2,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who will attend Illinois colleges or universities this fall. Applications as well as eligibility criteria may be obtained at the TOI Web site, toi.org, or by contacting the St. Charles Township offices at 1725 Dean St. or at your high school's guidance office. Hansen-Furnas Foundation: The Hansen-Furnas Foundation Inc., a nonprofit, charitable organization, announces the scholarship applications for the 2009-10 school year are now available. The application deadline for college and university undergraduate scholarships is March 1. Prospective students living within a 12-mile radius of Batavia, or in Clarke County, Iowa, are eligible to apply.
Criteria for granting scholarship awards are based primarily on financial need and academic scholarship. Character references, the quality of the applicant's letter of intent, and work experience are also considered to ensure successful selections. The general undergraduate scholarships offer payment toward tuition and fees for students pursuing studies at any accredited college or university. The William Carlyle Furnas scholarship, and Leto M. Fumas scholarship are granted to one individual each year. All applicants must be U.S. citizens and students must reapply for a scholarship each year.
• Hansen-Furnas Foundation. Inc. General Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded to individuals planning to enroll, or enrolled, as undergraduate students. These awards offer a maximum of $3,000 per year.
• William Carlyle Furnas undergraduate full-tuition scholarship is awarded to a student planning to enroll, or enrolled, at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Furnas Electric Company founder Carl Furnas graduated from Purdue in 1908.
• Leto M. Furnas Graduate Scholarship for Women is awarded to a woman planning to enroll, or currently enrolled in, a postgraduate degree. It is named for Leto M. Furnas, spouse of Furnas Electric Company founder William Carlyle Furnas. This tuition award is a maximum of $5,000 per grant.
Applications are now available in your local area high school guidance counselor's office. In addition, all scholarship applications (new, renewal, graduate) are available outside the foundation office at 28 S. Water St., Suite 310, Batavia. For details, call (630) 761-1390. Delnor Auxiliary: The Delnor Auxiliary offers five $1,000 scholarships to qualifying high school seniors who are planning to pursue careers in a health care field. The Margery Clark Burgess Memorial Scholarship is available to a graduating senior from St. Charles Unit District 303. Two Olivia Smart Scholarships and two Delnor Hospital Auxiliary Scholarships will be awarded to graduating seniors who reside in Delnor's primary service area. By February, guidelines and applications will be available in all area high school guidance offices, as well as in Delnor's volunteer services office, and online at www.delnorauxiliary.com. Illinois Sheriff's Association Scholarship: Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez will be awarding one scholarship in the amount of $500. This is part of the Illinois Sheriff's Association Scholarship program where the ISA hands out over $53,000 in college scholarships throughout the state to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 2009-10 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only. The student must be enrolled full time at a certified intuition of higher learning in the state of Illinois. There are no restrictions on any applicant by reasons of age, race, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only restrictions are as follows: applicants must be a permanent Illinois resident; scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state; and students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2009-10 school year (excluding summer session). Applications are now available at the Kane County Sheriff's Department or on the Internet at www.ilsheriff.org. Students must complete the application, answer the essay question, and return all documentation to the Kane County Sheriff's Department by March 13. For details, call Dawn Barsanti at (630) 208-2003.
Geneva Mother's Club: The Mother's Club of Geneva awards 13 $1,000 scholarships to Geneva residents who are either a high school senior, current college student or adult returning to college for the 2009-10 academic year. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, community service and academic achievement. The deadline is March 31. Applications can be downloaded from www.mothersclubofgeneva.com or visit the Geneva High School guidance office and the Geneva Public Library.
Pottawatomie Garden Club: The Pottawatomie Garden Club will be awarding a $3,000.00 scholarship to any student interested in studies related to botany, ecology, forestry, agriculture, horticulture or the environment. Applicants must be a high school senior or have a high school diploma and reside within the St. Charles Unit District 303 boundaries. To receive the scholarship, college student must be enrolled full-time during the 2008-09 school year. Applications must be postmarked on or before April 3. Application forms are available at local high school counselor offices or visit www.pottagardenclub.org.
Delnor Health Care Foundation: The Delnor Health Care Foundation offers the Charles Hanson, M.D. Scholarship to qualifying students. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must a Delnor volunteer, medical staff member, employee or a relative of one of these, an employee of a Delnor-affiliated physician, or resident of a community served by Delnor Health System. Those communities include Aurora, Batavia, DeKalb, Geneva, Elburn, Elgin, Kaneville, LaFox, Maple Park, Mooseheart, North Aurora, St. Charles, South Elgin, Sugar Grove, Sycamore, Virgil, Wasco, Wayne and West Chicago. Applicants must also have been accepted to a medical school, graduate program, or professional program, with all applicable undergraduate/prerequisites completed and be pursuing a medically related career. Examples of qualifying study include nursing, medicine and physical therapy. Previous award recipients are welcomed to reapply for the scholarship award. Applications are due by May 1.
