Meadows rallies to finish second in MSL East

Rolling Meadows guard Will Trunk knew what was on the line when his team fell behind by 14 points in the fourth quarter Friday at Hersey.

"It was now or never," said the senior. "We realized what was at stake. Our goal was to place as high as we could in conference this year.

"We were picked by a lot of people to finish last, and we wanted to prove everyone wrong. With a win we had a chance for second place."

Trunk led Meadows with a game-high 17 points as the Mustangs (12-12, 6-4) erased a 39-25 deficit with a 15-0 run en route to a 53-47 Mid-Suburban East victory.

Teammate Ted Metzger matched Trunk with 17 points including 10-for-10 from the free throw line, all coming in the fourth quarter.

"That's senior leadership right there," said Trunk of Metzger. "You can't teach that."

Senior guard Demitriy Velikov led Hersey (11-14, 4-6) with 16 points while Kyle Miklasz had 15.

"We stopped scoring," said Hersey coach Steve Messer, "and they were getting to the rim and making their free throws. We didn't play terrible on defense, but they were doing some good stuff on offense."
