Probation, suspended sentence for driver who fled crash that hurt friends

A Lakemoor man with a driving record labeled "atrocious" by a McHenry County judge was sentenced Thursday to 120 days in jail for a DUI-related crash in 2006 that injured three of his passengers.

However, Anthony J. Supol, 27, will not have to serve any of that jail time unless he breaks any laws, drinks alcohol or violates any terms of a two-year probation sentence handed down along with jail term.

Supol pleaded guilty in November to misdemeanor charges of DUI and leaving the scene of an accident stemming from a one-car crash in McHenry Township. The Oct. 28, 2006 crash injured three of Supol's five passengers, including a 28-year-old Algonquin man who suffered a cracked vertebra and dislocated shoulder.

Supol ran away from the crash scene and later was found at home with blood on his hands, mud on his clothes and slurring his speech, said Assistant McHenry County State's Attorney Ryan Blackney.

Supol had been seeking a sentence of court supervision that would have allowed him to avoid having the DUI conviction on his record. But Judge Sharon Prather shot that down after learning his record includes more than 20 prior traffic offenses, including five for driving on a suspended license and five others for speeding.

"From what I can tell you have been on court supervision about 17 times," Prather said. "Under those circumstances, there is no way this could would consider a supervision sentence."
