Route 83 shut down due to slick road

Lake County Sheriff's police closed southbound Route 83 between Gilmer Road and Route 45 in unincorporated Lake County for about two hours Thursday due to slick road conditions.

Kevin Parker, deputy chief of highway patrol for the sheriff's office, said officers responded to two accidents on that stretch of road before 5:30 a.m., and determined conditions were too slick for travel.

Lake County Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Christopher Thompson said salt trucks were called in from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the road reopened by 7:30 a.m.

"Water was running off a driveway into the street, creating an extremely slippery area," Thompson said. "We called in IDOT and, to prevent further accidents, closed the road until the area could be salted."

There was only one minor injury in the two accidents on that stretch of Route 83, which is near Wauconda, Mundelein and Long Grove.

One accident was a two-car crash, and the second involved three vehicles. The minor injury was a cut leg, and the person involved was taken to a nearby hospital for stitches, Parker said.
