South Elgin's Potts qualifies for sectionals
South Elgin junior Emily Potts left her mark at the IHSA Glenbard West girls gymnastics regional Wednesday night, qualifying for sectionals in three events as well as the all-around competition.
Potts' performance led the Storm co-op team to a second-place finish in the regional with a score of 138.850.
Glenbard West won the team championship with a 146.525 and Geneva was third at 134.850. Only the team champion advances to sectionals automatically.
Glenbard West will also host the sectional. That competition will be Monday, Feb. 9.
Potts qualified on the vault, the uneven parallel bars and the balance beam and finished third in the all-around scoring.
She finished second on the vault, scoring a 9.375 to champion Sarah Udelhofen's 9.400. Udelhofen is from Glenbard West.
On the bars, Potts scored an 8.900 to finish fourth. Becky Mladucky of Glenbard West won the competition with a 9.400.
Potts then finished fifth on the balance beam with a score of 9.075. Mladucky also won that event with a score of 9.250. The top five individuals in each event advance to sectionals.
Despite not being in the top five on the floor exercise, Potts did score a 35.550 in the all-around competition to nab a sectional qualifying spot. Mladucky, a sophomore, won the all-around with a 37.325.
South Elgin sophomore Taeopae Wetterman will also compete at the sectional next week after scoring an 8.800 on the bars, which was good for the fifth and final qualifying spot in that event.
