Celebrate 100 years:
Mundelein will celebrate its centennial on Saturday, Feb. 7 with a ceremony and open-house events. The kickoff ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Lincoln School, 200 W. Maple Ave. It will include a performance by the Mundelein High School jazz ensemble and remarks from local officials. Additionally, public tours will be available at six locations: village hall; the police station, the main fire station, the former fire station on Seymour Avenue; the Fort Hill Heritage Museum; and the Round Robin Bed and Breakfast, which once was the home of Mundelein's first mayor.
Rock, Paper, $500
Rock, paper, scissors enthusiasts have a chance to get paid to play, to the tune of $500. The Illinois Lottery hosts a rock, paper, scissors tournament tonight at 9 at Sideouts Eatery, 4018 Roberts Road in Island Lake. Participants will be randomly drawn to form a tournament bracket of 32. The winner of the tournament will receive the cash prize. The tournament is free to enter but participants must be at least 18 years of age. The Illinois Lottery is hosting rock, paper, scissors tournaments across the state in promotion of their new Rock, Paper, Scissors ticket. Director of promotions Paul Arnell said past events have had an average attendance of 200 people.
New charter school board member
Grayslake resident John Wylie has been selected as a new board member for Prairie Crossing Charter School. Wylie replaces Cheryl Pytlarz, who resigned from her seat on the Grayslake school's board last year. Wylie is a parent of a former Prairie Crossing student and is an attorney who has practiced law for nearly 25 years. His Prairie Crossing board term ends in October. Prairie Crossing is within the boundaries of Woodland Elementary District 50 and Fremont Elemnentary District 79. Woodland Fremont students may attend the much-smaller Prairie Crossing without charge. Prairie Crossing features an environmentally focused curriculum.
