Murmann steps down at Schaumburg

Schaumburg girls basketball coach Bill Murmann, who has guided the Saxons to two Mid-Suburban West titles and three regional crowns since 2002, has resigned his post.

"It revolves around personal issues that demand more time of me off the court," said Murmann, who began coaching underlevel girls basketball in 1983 at Schaumburg."It is a situation where I am not as effective with the team as I need to be and for the best interest of the players it would be best if I stepped out at this time."

Stepping in will be Jay Colloton, who has been Murmann's assistant for the past several seasons.

"I have great faith in Jay," Murmann said. "He's a great guy, a great coach. It's nice to know the kids are being left in good hands."

Murmann, who has been a science teacher at Schaumburg since 1982, coached the St. Viator girls basketball team for five years before taking over at Schaumburg. He guided the Lions to their only regional title in school history and also won eight regular season tournaments, including five Snowflake Classics.

At Schaumburg, he compiled a record of 121-69. His teams have won 20 games each of the last four seasons and have appeared in three sectional finals games.

The Saxons are currently 6-17 and 1-6 in the MSL West.

"I've had a lot of great times at Schaumburg," said Murmann, a former Leyden High School offensive lineman who has also coached football at Schaumburg and currently at St. Viator. "I've created a lot of good memories and now it's time to move on. I'm going to exit the same way I came in with - with class and dignity. I wish the best to the girls and the team."
