Free screening for blood pressure, weight and body mass index is available from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays at the Salvation Army, 1710 S. Seventh St., St. Charles. Geneva High School has its eighth-grade Parent Night at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 in Viking Commons at the school, 416 McKinley Ave. It will provide information about the departments and progression of courses, and services provided by the counseling department. Guidance in hard times
The Rev. Francis J. Hoffman, a columnist and radio host known as Father Rocky, will present "Finding Peace in an Uncertain World" at 7 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 Main St., Batavia. Girls lacrosse registration
The St. Charles Girls Co-Op High School lacrosse team will hold general registration for all players from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12 in the lower level meeting room at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. The club fields junior varsity and varsity teams and is comprised of players from St. Charles East and North high schools. Players of all experience levels are welcome. Sheriff points to successes
The DuPage County sheriff's tactical narcotics team seized drugs with a street value of $5.5 million during 116 investigations in 2008, Sheriff John Zaruba announced Tuesday. In a written statement, Zaruba said team members made 106 arrests, involving 73 felonies, and recovered 16,208 grams of cocaine, 1,764 grams of cannabis, 283 grams of methamphetamines, 675 Ecstasy pills and varying amounts of heroin and GHB. In April, detectives seized 15 kilograms of cocaine with a street value of $4.5 million that led to the arrest of five suspects. The undercover task force includes investigators from the Glen Ellyn, Lisle, West Chicago and Woodridge police departments.
