Basketball goes pink for a night at Warren Twp. High
Friday's varsity girls basketball game at Warren Township High School may involve more pink than sports fans are accustomed to dealing with.
The Future Business Leaders of America will make it a pink basketball game by selling student-designed pink T-shirts, cookies with pink sprinkles and other pink paraphernalia. The proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
The Blue Devils take on Libertyville at 6 p.m. at the Warren Township High School's Almond Campus, 34090 Almond Road in Gurnee. The event will also feature a halftime shootout.
Matt Vogel, head adviser for the Future Business Leaders of America, said this has been a student-lead event.
A student committee designed the T-shirts and students came up with the slogans "pink out" and "real devils wear pink."
Vogel said they hope to raise $2,000 to $3,000 through the event. He said T-shirt presales have already brought in more than $1,000.
"In terms of T-shirt sales, we've already had a great turnout," Vogel said. "Hopefully that translates into a lot of people coming out to the game."
Vogel and the Future Business Leaders of America have worked with the American Cancer Society before. He said council for life, which also benefits the society, began in 2001 and there will be another event May 22.
"Last year we raised in the ballpark of $30,000 (for the American Cancer Society)," Vogel said.
Friday's pink basketball game began to take shape when the head varsity coach approached Vogel about it during the summer. They formed a committee through the Future Business Leaders of America and the students took the reigns from there.
This is the high school's first pink basketball game but Vogel said he hopes to make it an annual event.
