DiPrima, Nisbet lift BG
Buffalo Grove's Andrea DiPrima and Heather Nisbet had a nice assisted triple play working Wednesday night.
Five times in the second half the guards found each other for 3-pointers - including a big pair down the stretch - to lift the Bison (8-16, 2-5) to a 47-42 Mid-Suburban East girls basketball victory over visiting Rolling Meadows (7-15, 0-7).
"It was fun," Nisbet said after hitting all 3 of her 3s and scoring 11 of her 12 points after halftime. "It happens a lot. I know 'Dree' always has a hot hand so I look for her a lot."
After missing 3 first-half attempts behind the arc, DiPrima was 2-for-3 and scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half.
The sophomore's biggest shot came after Meadows got within 37-36 on 1-of-2 free throws by Maddy Urban (15 points, two 3s). Off an inbound set, Nisbet found DiPrima in the right corner for a 3 with 3:13 to play.
Urban countered with a baseline drive at 2:55, but after a Meadows turnover, DiPrima found Nisbet for a 3 and a 43-38 lead a minute later.
"Today I'm happy we finished the game," DiPrima said.
"We've been in a lot of those situations and hopefully we'll get more and more comfortable every time."
DiPrima, Nisbet and Kaitlin Hillner helped the Bison open a 31-21 lead 21/2 minutes into the second half. But they couldn't increase it with 11 of their 19 turnovers in the first 10 minutes after halftime.
"Give them credit, they played really good 'D' and were in the passing lanes constantly," Nisbet said. "We got really sloppy at one point."
Meadows sophomore Ashley Rios made a big impact inside in her first game with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Rios just became eligible after family moves from Puerto Rico and Miami and had consecutive baskets in close to cut the deficit to 37-35 with 4:25 left.
"I'm really excited for her," said Meadows coach Todd Hatfield. "She's been great. She's done all the right things the last two months and been at every practice."
Meadows got within 3 points twice in the final 1:37 but BG answered each time with a KC Dunne drive and DiPrima's 2 free throws to set the final score with 27 seconds left.
"It got really nerve-racking but we held our composure well," Nisbet said.
"Energy we can control and taking care of the basketball we can control," said BG coach Pat Dudle, whose team didn't have a turnover the last six minutes. "If we do those things we can play with anyone. If we don't do those things we won't be very successful.
"We executed well at the end but we just need that consistency."
Meadows was just 8-for-15 on free throws and Hatfield pointed to buzzer-beaters by Kelly Mahoney for a 3 and Brittany Abrahms inside in the first half in its second 5-point loss to BG this month.
"And if we guard the 3-point line a little better in the second half," Hatfield said.
"You can point your finger at a lot of areas."
