Deer Park OK's hotel tax
Deer Park has adopted a 5 percent hotel tax in anticipation of a new hotel set to open later this year. A Hampton Inn is under construction along Lake-Cook Road that village officials said is on schedule to open this spring. Five percent was the highest tax a non-home-rule community like Deer Park can implement without having to seek voter approval. Village Administrator Jim Connors said there was an old, 4-percent hotel tax on the books, but it had been inactive since there are no hotels currently operating in town. That was repealed and replaced with the new tax ordinance.
Free museum tours
School groups are invited to free docent-led tours of the touring exhibition "The American Soldier: A Photographic Tribute" at the Lake County Discovery Museum, near Wauconda, through Feb. 13. The Lake County Discovery Museum is the only site in the Chicago area to host the American Soldier exhibition, which features 116 large scale photos that cover America at war during the Civil War, Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, U.S. operations in Afghanistan and Iraq war. The images in the exhibition capture a range of emotions of the American soldier's odyssey through history. Call (847) 968-3400 for exhibition information or visit www.LCFPD.org/AmericanSoldier.
