Warden does double duty for Glenbard W.
Tyler Warden pulled a double-whammy on Downers Grove North.
The Glenbard West junior forward scored 20 points while getting the Trojans' best player, Kameron Norton, into foul trouble.
When the 6-foot-6 Norton was active Downers North was right there. He was inactive more than not and fouled out with 3:34 left to play, a factor in Glenbard West's 62-48 West Suburban Silver victory over the host Trojans.
"He was the biggest threat they had, we thought, so to get him out of the game was huge for us," said Warden, who enjoyed a 14-point first half.
"I just thought it was a great team effort. Twenty points, it doesn't really matter as long as we get a win."
Downers North (6-10, 0-4) came out, as coach Jim Thomas said, "like a thoroughbred." Norton scored 8 of his 13 points and Mark Perales hit a pair of 3s for a 14-9 lead after one quarter.
Norton took his second foul at 1:22 of the first quarter, returned in the midst of a Warden-led 12-2 run, then committed his third foul with 2:45 left before halftime.
Though Glenbard West (7-8, 3-2) took only a 26-24 lead into the third quarter, Warden immediately drew Norton's fourth foul that sent him to the bench until the start of the fourth.
"We told them we can't let guys get loose and drive, let's let them take contested jumpers, and the first play... I mean, they were going at him, we knew they were going to go at him," Thomas said.
"That was fortunate for us," said Glenbard West coach Tim Hoder. "He showed early what he could do."
The Hilltoppers went up 36-26 only to have Perales, Tom Benton and Pete Johnson cut the deficit to 38-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Glenbard West led 44-36 with 4:58 remaining when Hoder called time. When the Hilltoppers returned they spread the floor and were able to find Kevin Smith for a three-point play and Dave McCaffrey for a layup.
Downers North hung within 49-39 with 3:42 left, but Glenbard West's Chris Cochrane scored twice, then the Hilltoppers marched to the foul line, McCaffrey hitting 6 of 7 down the stretch. McCaffrey joined Smith with 15 points apiece. Benton led the Trojans with 14 and Perales added 9.
"It was just a good overall game," Hoder said. "We had nice balance with our scoring. I thought we did a lot of things really well."
