No shame about Burris actions
As a long time reader of the Daily Herald, I am fed up with the recent coverage regarding the Governor's appointment of Roland Burris to our state's open senate seat. Your publication has repeatedly scolded Mr. Burris for accepting the appointment from the shady Gov. Blagojevich. He should be ashamed of himself, you suggest.
I disagree. The shame belongs to the Illinois legislature for failing to prevent our governor from filling the seat and then acting surprised when he did it. The shame also belongs to Blagojevich for trying to sell the seat in the first place. Your paper should also be ashamed for implying that Mr. Burris was doing anything other than putting the voters of Illinois first.
If Roland Burris did what many thought he should do, which was to say no in the first place, our senate seat would still remain empty. That would just leave the people of Illinois on the short end of the stick. Roland Burris was the only person with any courage willing to stand in the cyclone and remain there defending the right of the citizens of the State of Illinois to be completely represented in the Senate. I'm no Pollyanna. I know we're talking about politicians here, but, the citizens of Illinois deserve full and complete representation in Washington.
The new president of my country comes from Illinois, and our newest senator, Roland Burris, is ready to take on the tough challenges. I see no reason for the residents of Illinois to be ashamed or embarrassed.
