Train hits car, driver escapes injury

An Aurora woman whose car slid into the path of an oncoming train Friday managed to escape before the vehicle was crushed.

The crash happened about 9:15 a.m. on Meredith Road north of Route 38 in unincorporated Virgil Township, west of Elburn, according to the Kane County sheriff's department. No one was hurt.

Police said Julie Nortman, age unavailable, was driving north on Meredith Road and slid on a patch of ice as she attempted to stop at a Union Pacific Railroad crossing. She was unable to move her Pontiac Grand Am off the tracks but was able to get out before the train struck.

Nortman was traveling alone at the time of the crash. No citations were issued.

"There appears to be no evidence of anyone racing the train," Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said. "Luckily, there were no injuries and no major issues with the train."

Meredith Road between McNulty Road and Route 38 was closed for about two hours while crews worked the scene, Gengler said.
