Payne has stress fracture in back

Schaumburg boys basketball star Cully Payne will not play in Saturday night's High School Hoops Showdown at the Sears Centre because of a stress fracture in his back.

Payne learned about the stress fracture late Friday night after getting results of a bone scan done earlier that afternoon. Schaumburg plays Jacobs at 6:30 p.m. game of a triple-header.

Payne said he expects to have a CT scan done Monday or Tuesday to determine the length of time he will be sidelined.

The Alabama-bound Payne is averaging 22 points a game for the Saxons, who are ranked eighth in the state in The Associated Press Class 4A state poll. He has been battling back problems for more than a month and had to sit out Thursday's 61-51 win at Hoffman Estates.

Schaumburg's next Mid-Suburban West game is next Saturday at two-time defending MSL champion Conant.
