No doom in the Titan Dome for Hersey
Playing basketball at Glenbrook South isn't always the easiest task for opposing teams.
But on Tuesday night, the Hersey girls acted as if they'd played in the Titan Dome year round.
The Huskies rang up a season-high for points against a team that was 11-5 at tip-off and cruised to a 71-56 nonconference triumph in Glenview.
The offensive outburst came just three days after the Huskies (13-6) had scored only 9 points in the first half against Wheeling, the No. 2 ranked team in Class 4A.
"After Saturday night, we were frustrated because we usually score 50 or more points and we had only 36," said Huskies senior guard Kelly Rogowski, who scored 14 points Tuesday with a pair of 3-pointers. "We wanted to score a lot of points because we knew we could play better than we did in that first half against Wheeling. That first half killed us."
The Huskies certainly showed what they're capable of offensively, as sophomore Megan Rogowski scored a game-high 17 points (four 3-pointers) and junior Maddie Swan added 13.
Senior Kristen Gierman tossed in 8 while juniors Kari Tunney, Julia Fredian and Kathyrn Korff each had 5.
The Huskies led 8-7 when Kelly Rogowski drilled a 3-pointer to commence a 14-1 run capped by junior Andrea Perkins' driving layup with 7:33 left in the second.
That gave the Huskies a 21-8 cushion which they extended to 41-22 by the break.
"They're a real good team and the nice thing is they have guards who can shoot and post players who are good inside." said Titans coach Steve Weissenstein, whose team was led by senior Suzanne Jobski's 10 points. "They are then kind of team that can go far.
"If you take away their outside, they're not afraid to go inside to their posts. They are very skilled. I give them all the credit in the world. They played well."
The Huskies' statistics credited Gierman with a game-high 10 rebounds while Fredian handed out 6 assists.
Gierman joined sophomore Eileen Zydek, Swan and Korff to give Huskies coach Mary Fendley four solid posts who rotated freely throughout the game.
"It worked out well keeping them all well-refreshed," the coach said. "They all rebounded strong when they got in."
"We all just worked real hard in the post," said Swan, also a talented volleyball player. "We hadn't lost back-to-back games all season and we really wanted to keep that going against a team we knew was very good."
The Huskies committed just 2 turnovers in the first half.
"And one was an offensive foul," said Fendley, whose team's previous best offensive outings were 67 points in wins over Evanston and Mother McAuley. "And we had real good ball handling. For sure, this was our best offensive game."
"In the first half, we shot really well," Kelly Rogowski added. "And our passing was awesome. Everyone made the extra pass to get a good shot. We know we can play with the top teams and we want to show it."
Barrington 46, Naperville Central 44: Host Barrington improved to 14-6 as senior Jenny Schnack (16 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 assists) and sophomore Abby Kirchoff (12 points) led the way in the Sweet Sixteen tourney game.
"Jenny made a lot of good things happen on defense for us," said Barrington coach Babbi Barreiro. "And Abby did a good job shooting the ball. She was very effective on offense, taking good shots."
Sophomore Sarah Mass produced her usual all-around solid floor game, collecting 8 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists while classmate Brooke Chandor came up with a team-high 9 rebounds.
"Sarah had another good game and Brooke came up huge," added Barreiro, whose team is in a three-way tie for first in the Mid-Suburban West and visits Conant on Friday. "She had 2 rebounds in the final minute that were huge. Brooke has really been doing a nice job 'playing big' for us."
The coach also praised the solid effort off the bench by sophomore Kiersten Tinkoff.
"We did have 16 turnovers, which is way too many," Barreiro added. "We did some good things but we made some silly mistakes."
Maine South 45, Maine West 38: Maine West (11-7) was led by junior Sam Acosta (14 points), senior Kelsey Hargesheimer (9) and junior Megan O'Neill (8) in the Sweet Sixteen tourney game in Park Ridge.
