Man charged in Huntley bank robbery
An Elk Grove Village man charged in a string of robberies in the Northwest suburbs has been charged in the Nov. 21 robbery of the McHenry Savings Bank in Huntley, police said Friday.
Robert R. Maday, 38, has been charged with financial institution robbery and theft of more than $10,000, both felonies.
Schaumburg police arrested Maday for traffic violations on Dec. 29. Items in Maday's car implicated him in the robbery of a Harris Bank in Buffalo Grove that occurred just two hours before the traffic stop, according to police.
Schaumburg police said they found a pellet gun, toy guns, cocaine, a ski mask and more than $15,000 in cash in Maday's car.
At the time of his arrest, Maday was on parole for a robbery conviction in Pennsylvania, authorities said.
Maday has been on parole since 2005 after serving more than 10 years at a federal prison in Lewisburg, Penn., for armed bank robbery, according to authorities.
Maday is accused of taking more than $13,000 in the Buffalo Grove heist and faces four counts of aggravated robbery for October robberies in Schaumburg in which he took purses or money from women while showing or implying a gun.
Maday confessed to the Dec. 29 robbery in Buffalo Grove, according to a federal complaint.
In the Huntley robbery, a masked gunman walked into the McHenry Savings Bank at 10390 Route 47 around 4:15 p.m. and demanded money from the tellers, police said.
The robber then put more than $10,000 in a black bag and left, according to police.
Huntley police said evidence found at the scene of the robbery, eyewitness accounts and statements made by Maday when police interviewed him tied him to the crime.
Huntley police would not say whether Maday's statements amounted to a confession.
No one answered the phone Friday at Maday's last known address on the 500 block of Biesterfield Road.
Maday was turned over to the FBI on Dec. 31 and is being held without bond at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago, authorities said.
His next hearing will be at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13, in front of Judge Sharon Prather at the McHenry County courthouse.
Maday faces up to 20 years in prison for the Buffalo Grove robbery alone, according to the FBI.
