Vernon Hills library celebrates diversity

Help kick off the Vernon Area Public Library's yearlong event, "We the People... A Community of Immigrants," with a taste of culture on Saturday, Jan. 10.

Stephen Territo, head of patron services, said the library organized its first yearlong event in response to the diversity within the library district. The library is at 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire.

"We have quite a diverse community. We want to provide programs for everyone in the community, educate everyone about these cultures and celebrate the cultures of those who live in the community," he said.

The programming begins at 10 a.m. with African village folktales. Actors from Hot Silk Productions will present stories from African culture. Hear "Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears," "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters," "The Lion and the Woman and more" and learn the history of these classic tales.

Join Chef Matt Zagorski from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. as he shares insights into the cuisine of Argentina and demonstrates savory Carné Carbonada. Recipes and tasting are included.

The Jazmer Trio Ensemble performs from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m., showcasing a mix of instrumental and vocal Jewish, Israeli and Sephardic music, along with touches of 20th century jazz and American music.

Radio show host and celebrated performer James DeNomie presents a program on the Native American Indian dance and culture from 2:15 to 3 p.m.

Finally, get a Taste of Asia from 3:15 to 4 p.m. as Ying Stoller takes the group on a tour of Asian cuisine and demonstrates two meals - chicken stir fry over rice and Korean rib BBQ. Recipes and tasting are included.

Booths will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and include a sumi-e art display, traditional porcelain art, genealogy help, ethnic food and a visit from the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian.

Registration is required to attend the individual programs. Call (847) 634-3650 or visit vapld.info.

Territo said more than 40 programs will be planned as part of the multicultural fair. Among future programs will be classes on Japanese drawing, Irish music, Italian cooking, as well as a film series and book discussions. Information about these programs will be available on the Web site and in fliers available at the library.
