Can appeal tax assessment this month

The City of Des Plaines has received notification from Commissioner Brendan F. Houlihan of the Cook County Board of Review that residents can file appeals to their property tax assessment until Jan. 29. Residents who feel they've have been over-assessed based on similar homes in their area have an opportunity to appeal with the Cook County Board of Review. Materials necessary for filing an appeal, as well as an extensive outreach program, are offered through Houlihan's office. Registration forms ready for Dist. 96

Parents and guardians of incoming kindergartners living in Buffalo Grove-Long Grove District 96 should pick up a forms packet for registration weekdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. until Jan. 14 at the Willow Grove Kindergarten and Early Childhood Center, 777 Checker Drive, Buffalo Grove. To begin kindergarten in fall 2009, a child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. To receive a forms packet for an entering kindergartner, a guardian must show the child's original birth certificate or visa and two photocopied proofs of residency as described on the district Web site, district96.k12.il.us/family/student_registration.htm. Parents should bring the completed forms to Willow Grove for Kindergarten Registration Day from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 15. Call Sue Winston at (847) 541-3660 with questions. Registration will continue throughout the year.

District 23 holds registration

Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 is now accepting names of children who will be entering kindergarten in fall of 2009. Children must be 5 year old by Sept. 1, 2009. Registration is 1 to 7 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26 at Betsy Ross School, 700 N. Schoenbeck Road and 2 to 7 p.m., Jan. 26 at Eisenhower School, Camp MacDonald and Schoenbeck roads. Library trustee positions open

Three trustee positions for the Mount Prospect Public Library Board are open for the spring 2009 election. Those interested in running for library trustee must file their petitions during the Jan. 19 through 26 filing period. For details, call (847) 253-5675, or stop by the library at 10 S. Emerson St.
