Cary man cited after hitting squad car with truck

A 25-year-old Cary man was ticketed after damaging two squad cars parked with their emergency lights off during a domestic dispute investigation.

Matthew J. Straight, of the 100 block of South Prairie Street, suffered minor injuries in the accident that took place about 9:30 p.m. Monday night in front of 218 W. Main Street, said Sgt. Steve Schmitt of the McHenry County Sheriff's Department.

Schmitt said the squads were parked in front of the home with parking and headlights illuminated when Straight hit them as he was heading west down Main in his 1999 Ford F-150.

Straight was traveling at about 30 mph when he crashed into the first squad, authorities said. Momentum from the crash pushed the first squad into the second squad car, Schmitt said.

Straight told officers at the time that he tried to brake before hitting the cars, but that his brakes failed, Schmitt said.

Straight was transported from the crash to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released.

He was cited for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving with defective brakes, Schmitt said.
