Ind. town opposes Northbrook firm's plans for medical waste plant

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The mayor of Anderson, Ind., says he opposes construction of a plant that would vaporize pharmaceutical and electronics waste.

Mayor Kris Ockomon told opponents of the plant Tuesday night that the more he looked into the project, the less he liked it.

Northbrook-based PEAT International wants to build the plant in an industrial park in the city about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis.

Anderson's Board of Zoning Appeals approved the plant, but opponents later sued to stop construction.

Opponents say there's no information on whether the high-temperature plasma arc plant was safe. A PEAT consultant says plant emissions would be less toxic than cigarette smoke.

The Associated Press left a message with a PEAT International spokesman seeking comment.
