Des Plaines River still high:

The Des Plaines River is falling but more slowly than expected, with the water level in Des Plaines at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at 6.6 feet, about 0.7 feet under the Monday morning peak, the National Weather Service reported. The river now is anticipated to be below flood stage by Friday, Jan. 2, instead of today, as had been projected in an earlier report. The city's public works department is asking residents to put sandbags and flood debris out at the curb for pickup.

Ballot objection continues:

A Schaumburg Township electoral board hearing will resume Thursday, Jan. 8, on an objection to John A. Salmassi's candidacy for Schaumburg Township highway commissioner on the Feb. 24 Republican primary ballot. The objection was filed by incumbent Robert Fecarotta, who's seeking re-election. It is the only contested office in the primary. A hearing over the objection began Monday night, and the remaining issue to resolve is over Salmassi's party affiliation, as he voted Democrat in the February 2007 primary. The Democratic and Green parties will choose their candidates for the April 7 general election in caucuses on Jan. 13.

OSHA continues investigation:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has not yet concluded its investigation of the Dec. 12 death of a 28-year-old Lombard man at his workplace in Schaumburg. Brian Jensen was working alone at the Earle M. Jorgensen Co., 1100 Mitchell Blvd., when co-workers found him with his head caught in a large automated machine just before 10 a.m. Investigations by OSHA can take up to six months to conclude, depending on the complexity of the incident, representatives said. Schaumburg police have concluded their own investigation, having been satisfied that there was no criminal aspect to the death.
